Reach and Density on the Measured Grid

The coloured dots are real grid cells from our July 2026 Edmonton measurement. Green means nobody has locked the top three there. Red means four or more businesses already hold it. The blue circle is your radius.

The lattice is DecodeLocal’s real July 2026 Edmonton plumbing grid: 304 cells spaced 1.8 km apart, each one a live mobile map search. Drag the pin to your own address. This tool measures geometry and observed competitive density, and it does not predict rank. Reaching a cell is a prerequisite for winning it, never a guarantee.

How Geography Decides Local Rankings

One address does not rank a city

A single rank check from one location tells you almost nothing. The same search returns different businesses from different points, which is why we measure a grid rather than a postcode and why your position is a map, not a number.

Proximity is a ranking factor you cannot optimise away

Google weighs how close a business is to the searcher. Content and links move you within a radius; they rarely carry you across a whole metro. Knowing your realistic radius stops you paying to chase cells you cannot win.

Find the open cells before the crowded ones

The density colouring shows where the top three is contested and where it is wide open. A campaign that starts in the green cells banks wins early and builds the review mass needed for the red ones.

Decide whether a second location is the real answer

If the demand you want sits outside every radius you can hold, the fix is not more content. It is a second address, and that is a measurable decision rather than a hunch.

Set service-area expectations honestly

Businesses often list a service area far wider than their map presence. Compare the two and you learn where your Google Business Profile is quietly invisible.

Re-measure to prove the radius grew

Reach is not static. As reviews and relevance build, the cells where you appear expand outward. Re-running the same grid on a dated schedule is the only way to show that expansion happened.

Where this tool sits in our method

This estimator is a preview of the geographic half of our baseline. The paid instruments measure your actual position in every cell rather than the geometry of your radius.

Want This Run on Your Own Business?

The tool above works on the markets we have already measured. The paid work points the same instruments at yours: your grid, your keyword set, your named competitors, re-measured on a dated schedule so movement is provable rather than claimed.

The lattice under this estimator is a real grid we paid to search, cell by cell. Running that grid on a client market is the geographic stage of the method the Edmonton SEO agency behind this tool follows on every engagement.
