Directories That Actually Rank Here
The final column is the one that matters. It counts how many times each platform appeared in the organic top ten across the three Edmonton markets we measured, which is a far better reason to claim a listing than a generic domain authority score.

Counted across the dentist, law-firm and plumbing pulls of July 2026. Most directory profile links carry no ranking weight on their own. They are worth claiming because they occupy the results your customers are already reading, and because consistent name, address and phone data across them is a local ranking input.
What Citations Do, and What They Do Not
Consistency is the actual ranking input
Your name, address and phone number should be byte-identical everywhere they appear. Conflicting versions across directories weaken the confidence a search engine has in your location data, and that confidence is a local ranking factor.
Most of these links carry no ranking weight
Directory profile links are usually nofollow or heavily discounted. Claim them for consistency and for the customers reading those pages, not because you expect authority to flow through them. Anyone selling citations as a link-building package is selling the wrong reason.
Occupying the result is the real prize
When a directory holds position three for a query you want, a customer is going to read that page. Being listed on it, with reviews and complete information, means the result works for you rather than against you.
Start with the platforms measured in your own category
The Ranks in column shows which markets each platform actually appeared in. A trades directory is worth claiming for a plumbing business and close to worthless for a law firm, and this list says which is which.
Free first, paid only when the result justifies it
Work down the free intakes before paying for accreditation or a premium profile. The paid entries here are worth considering only where the platform genuinely holds ranking positions in your category.
Audit citations before building new ones
Duplicate and outdated listings do more damage than missing ones. Find and fix what already exists under old addresses or phone numbers first, then add.
Where citations sit in our method
Citation work is sequenced third in our execution order, after Google Business Profile fixes and on-page content, because it compounds what those two establish rather than replacing them.
- The Edmonton SEO Audit: finds which directories already carry your business, including the outdated listings nobody remembers creating
- The Schema Generator: produces the on-site version of the same name, address and phone data these listings must match
- The Profile Benchmarks: covers the profile signals that outweigh citations in the map pack
- The One-Time SEO Sprint: runs link and citation work in sequence rather than as a numbered package
- SEO for Plumbers in Edmonton: shows how much of that market's organic surface directories and forums actually hold
Want This Run on Your Own Business?
The tool above works on the markets we have already measured. The paid work points the same instruments at yours: your grid, your keyword set, your named competitors, re-measured on a dated schedule so movement is provable rather than claimed.
This list is a by-product of paid measurement, not a directory scrape. The pulls it came from were run as part of how we run Edmonton SEO, where citation work is sequenced third, after the profile and the on-page content.
